Musings of a Young Poet: Poems by Madi Mullens

“East Coast”

Every night I lay here

Snug in my bed and wonder

How to let go of all of my fears

Not the ones of spiders or clowns

But the ones where I fear to let down

Or when I fear I will be stuck in my hometown

The mature fears that sneak up on me

Oh, so profound

Just like the biggest choices I’ve ever made

Like forgetting about boys

And my move to the East Coast

I hate to boast

But the ocean is far better than the plains

And Oklahoma gave me nothing to gain

Unlike the salt in the air

That feels like my new home

The sound of seagulls

And the ocean foam

Held me so tenderly

With their imaginary arms

Handing me all of Monhegan’s charms

And shed light on my soul

This little island said to fear no more

And stomped my fears through the floor

“Painters Perspective”

I love to walk by

All the artists

To see through their eyes

A painter perched upon a hill

With paint and an oak easel

Creativity so lethal

Beauty – In A Sense

Of what is seen

With those Van Gogh Eyes

I love to walk by

To see what is painted

By those Van Gogh Eyes

“A Poet’s Bait”

All a poet wants is this:

To take breaths away

To make lovers sway

To turn skies sunny, not gray

To make people feel seen

Not A Jester – A King

To want their words

To refresh those who cry

To let others know

Even if not admittable

They resent some

Wishing to set the poem

Like a dinner table

Each Line – A Set of Silverware

Their Ideas – The Chairs

Word Salad made with care

For the ones who relate

Would you sit down

And take a poet’s bait?

“To Love a Scarred Heart”

There is a saying

“Love conquers all”

But a thought vying

It doesn’t apply to all

Somewhere lurks

A love so feigned

One Heart – Drenched in Vain

My, oh, my

What does it gain?

To cause such pain

Only a scarred heart

Fallen in love

Could tear one apart

“Cheers to the New Year”

Reflections of fireworks

Glistening in my eyes

Hearing hopeful cheer

In this New Year

Tis the season

Of new beginnings

To future winnings

Of wisdom and abundance

Another fulfilling chance

Making resolutions like

Finally visiting France

Stopping your nicotine intake

Or learning to bake

Here’s to another year

Of facing fears and crying tears
